Anytime Anyplace But Only You is the new solo project from Grass Cats front man, Russell Johnson. A compelling songwriter and singer, Russell is blessed with an immediately recognizable and bluesy tenor voice. Stretching the boundaries of the bluegrass repertoire, while maintaining a respectful link to the music’s heritage, he showcases a broad range of material with his soulful tenor. His soaring lead vocal on the banjo-driven title cut Anytime Anyplace But Only You and the purity and ache in his delivery on I Need To Know, serve as a testament to his commitment to traditional and classic bluegrass. Yet effortlessly, his voice can take on a deeper more resonant quality as he renders songs from other music genres such as the Dean Martin classic Sway, Maroon 5’s This Love or Shaggy’s Strength of a Woman. Having written or co-written half the tracks on the disc, he covers a lot of ground with songs of love and heartbreak, wasted lives and even an anthem to bluegrass itself. Some of bluegrass music’s brightest new stars and seasoned veteran musicians joined Russell on the recording. Stellar instrumental performances and inspired vocals highlight the disc that is being described as Russell’s best recording in his twenty plus year career.

Russell has worn a lot of different hats in the music business such as singer, songwriter, producer, mandolinist, recording and sound engineer, band leader, record label and studio owner. His original songs have reached the top of the charts with eleven of his compositions landing on the Bluegrass Unlimited National Bluegrass Survey. (Including two #1 singles for the Grass Cats; Bluegrass Man which was #1 in April and May 2003 and A Good Way To Get The Blues, #1 in June, July and August 2010). The Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) has twice nominated him for Songwriter of the year and as a producer he has 5 Top Ten CDs to his credit. He has been the front man for two popular bands in his twenty plus years of performing. In 1989 Russell formed New Vintage and they went on to win the Pizza Hut International Bluegrass Showdown and the SPBGMA National Band contest, both in 1993. With this success they became a mainstay on the bluegrass festival circuit and charts for much of the 90’s. They recorded five projects including three Top Ten CD’s for Pinecastle Records. Russell started The Grass Cats in 1997 with other local pickers as a “pick up band” to play small local events. When New Vintage took a hiatus in October of 2000, he focused his efforts on the Grass Cats and since then they have released seven CDs and continue to perform and record.
